Robert G. “Mitch” Mitchell, Greenville, Sugar Grove Twp. passed away Thursday morning, January 25, 2024, at Quality Life Services, Mercer with his family by his side. He was 87.
He was born in Greenville on April 13, 1936, a son of the late Guy W. and Eleanor (Ray) Mitchell. He was a graduate of the former Penn High School where he excelled in wrestling and competed in the State Wrestling Championships. He had been married to the former Carolyn Mowery on December 16, 1955, and she preceded him in death on April 25, 2009. He subsequently married the former Carole Shaffer Pfaff, who survives.
Mr. Mitchell had been employed by R.D. Werner Company where he retired after 39 years of service and had served as the president of the Werner Retirees for over 20 years. Mitch, also operated the family farm, raising Belgium horses and cattle. He excelled as an avid bowler and golfer. He was a lifelong member of the Kennard United Methodist Church and a member of Eureka Lodge # 290 Free and Accepted Masons.
He is survived by his wife, Carole, two daughters, Joni Maybee, Hadley, and Lisa Mitchell, Greensburg, KY; two sisters, Donna Chess, Greenville, and Cynthia (Randy) Olan, Mercer; a brother, William (Stephanie) Mitchell, Bourbonnais, IL; three grandchildren, Kayla (Ryan) Corbett, Micthell Maybee and Shane Carucci and two great-grandchildren, Xander and Quentin Corbett.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Carolyn, a son Randy Mitchell, a sister, Virginia Sherbondy, and a brother, Richard Mitchell.
Respecting the wishes of Robert, no services will be held with cremation selected as disposition.
