Richard "Dick" Dale Shollenberger

Richard Dale “Dick” Shollenberger, of Greenville, passed away early Tuesday afternoon, June 23, 2026, at The Villas at St. Paul’s Senior Retirement Community, Greenville. He was 92.

Born in Fredonia on November 29, 1933, he was the son of Samuel W. (“Happy”) Shollenberger and Dorothy Wagner Shollenberger.

Dick married Hazel Shearer on October 18, 1958, in New Castle, Pennsylvania. Together they shared 67 years of marriage and family life until her passing on May 9, 2026.

He attended Delaware Grove one-room schoolhouse for six years near the family homestead and later graduated from Fredonia Delaware Vo-Ag High School in 1951.

Dick proudly served in the United States Army for two years as a Sergeant in Battery B, 5th AAA Group as a gun commander.

He was employed as a fitter/welder for 30 years with Chicago Bridge & Iron Company in Greenville until its closing in 1983. He also worked in maintenance at Camp Nazareth of Mercer and served as a substitute rural mail carrier for the Fredonia U.S. Post Office for 16 years.

A devoted man of faith, Dick was formerly a member of St. John’s Reformed Church, where he served as both an elder and a deacon until the church closed after more than 75 years of his family's membership. Since 2006, he had been a member of Greenville Alliance Church.  Richard volunteered for Lakeview Meals on Wheels and enjoyed traveling and spending the winter months in Myrtle Beach.

Dick enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time at his hunting camp at Bloomster Hollow, Smethport, Pennsylvania, in the company of his sons.

He is survived by his sons, Ronald (Karen) Shollenberger of Fredonia and Donald (Karen) Shollenberger of Champion, Ohio; a brother, Gary (Sally) Shollenberger, Jamestown; he was also blessed with grandchildren, Ronald, Patricia, and Joseph Dunlap, as well as great-grandchildren, Ava Marie, Ronald, Brody, Bryan, and Andrew, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Hazel, and his brothers, Carl and Glen.

The family will privately honor Richard's life with a memorial service at the Greenville Alliance Church, with his pastor, Rev. Byron Dickey, officiating.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation was entrusted to the Fredonia branch of the Robert L. Snyder Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 169 Second Street, Fredonia. Richard will be laid to rest next to his wife at the Delaware Cemetery.
