Leon F. Ferguson, Jr., Fredonia (Delaware Twp.) passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at the Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was 87.
He was born in Transfer, PA, on August 12, 1937, the son of the late Leon F. and Verna Lucille (Dunkerly) Ferguson, Sr. He graduated from Hickory High School in 1955. On September 4, 1957, he married the former, Katherine J. Wilson, and together they shared 67 years. For over 40 years, Leon owned and operated along with his brother, Bill, Ferguson Steel and Greenville Steel Sales. Following his retirement, he pursued a second career in farming and raising Black Angus cattle. He was a member of the Fredonia Presbyterian Church, where he had served as an elder, a trustee, and a greeter. He was a member of the Eureka Lodge # 290 Free and Accepted Masons, Greenville, The New Castle Consistory, and had served as vice chairman of the Mercer County Land Preservation Board. He was a licensed pilot, always enjoying the opportunity to fly the company Piper Cherokee Airplane. For many years, he bowled with the Fredonia Businessmen. Along with his wife, he enjoyed traveling and visiting all 50 states. He was active in Little League and Boy Scouting in his early years.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine, his three children, Richard Ferguson, Ravenna, OH, Ronald (Patty) Ferguson, Fredonia, and Cheryl (William) Deschand, Fredonia; three brothers, Bill Ferguson, Greenville, Fred Ferguson, Transfer and Chuck Ferguson, Denver, CO; 5 grandchildren, Ronald and Bradley Ferguson, Adam Deschand, Grace (Eli) Feuerstein and Ryan Deschand and two step-grandsons, Trevor and Tyler Board,
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Elsie Colson.
Private family service will be held at the Fredonia Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Eric M. Peters officiating. Leon will be laid to rest at the Delaware Cemetery.
