John A. Shilling, Conneaut Lake (Greenwood Twp.), passed away Thursday morning, December 19, 2024, at the Meadville Medical Center with his family by his side. He was 80.
John was born in Meadville on March 9, 1944, a son of the late Clarence and Mary (Styer) Shilling. John had served honorably with the US Army during the Vietnam War, and was stationed in Greenland. On March 29, 1969, he married the former Kay Consla, and together they shared 55 years together. Through the years, Mr. Shilling had been employed as a mechanic for Oswald Equipment and the former Spalding’s Meadville. He finished his working career with Wm. Unger and Associates, installing fire suppression equipment.
He was a lifetime member of the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department and would often be found driving the tanker. He was also a social member of Vernon Central Hose Company. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his wife Kay; three children: Lesa (Robert) Cornell, Pennhook, VA, Monica (Joseph) Zapia, Jr., Lowellville, OH, and Aaron (Lacey) Shilling, Harmonsburg; a sister, Margaret Gevin, Cochranton; three grandchildren, Christopher (Adrielle) Cornell, Bailey Shilling, and Mirissa (Aaron) Legare; and three great-grandchildren, Bentley, Ridge, and Wrenley. Several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, William Schlachter, two sisters, Mary “Edith” Shuffstall and Lois Peterson, a brother, Duane Shilling, and a grandson, Tyler Shilling.
A visitation will be held on Sunday from 1:00 – 3:00 PM, concluding with the sharing of memories at the Robert L. Snyder Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 3222 Perry Hwy., Sheakleyville. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family online at www.snyderfh.com
The family has suggested that memorial tributes be made to the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department, 15444 State Hwy 285, Conneaut Lake, or to Vernon Central Hose Company, 16589 McMath Ave, Meadville.
