James R.”Sonny” Gallant Obituary

James Riley “Sonny” Gallant, Middletown, NY and  formerly of Cochranton passed away early Tuesday morning on January 19, 2021 at the Middletown Park Manor, Middletown, NY following complications of COVID-19.  He was 89.

James was born in Ashtabula, Ohio on December 16, 1931 a son of the late Albert R. and Helen (Bradford) Gallant.  On July 31, 1967 he married the former Alberta C. Griffith who preceded him in death on May 4, 2010.  He was a mechanic by trade and had been a truck driver. Mr. Gallant loved making maple syrup. He was an avid hunter who enjoyed the beauty of the outdoors and could always be found tinkering with anything he could get his hands on.  James had served with the US Coast Guard.

He is survived by his son, James (Deborah) Gallant, Middletown, NY; three daughters, Becky (Leonard) Hutchins. OK, Robin (Scot) Barnes, Meadville and Debbie Gallant, Kittanning; three sisters, Patty Hollabaugh, Linesville, Georgia Long, Sandy Lake and Josephine Gallant, Linesville; 18 grandchildren, James, Warren and Sophia Gallant of NY, David, Danny, Ace and Billy Thompson and Laura Merritt, OK, Steven Swartz, SC  Mandy Beasley, PA, Tara Rogers, Bryanna, Julia Barnes, VA, Gabriel Barnes, PA, Sarah, Jessica, David and Marcus Ziegler, PA; 42 great grandchildren and 1 great great  grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Alberta; siblings, Albert Gallant, Jr., Dorothy Keith and Peggy Shumaker and a daughter, Sandra Swartz.

The family will be honoring the life of James with private family services, He will be laid next to his wife  at the Mumford Chapel at a later date.  Memorial tributes may be made to a charity of the donors choice.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful, caring staff and thoughtful people at Promenade at Middletown and Middletown Park Manor who made Dad feel safe and loved when he could no longer live at home with his family.
