Helen Straub Obituary

Helen E. Straub, Otter Creek Twp., Greenville passed away early Saturday morning, March 16, 2019 in the comfort of her home following a period of declining health.  She was  75.

Helen was born at the former Mercer Cottage on September 9, 1943 a daughter of the late Kenneth and Alice (Pressler) Shilling.  She was a 1961 graduate of the Commodore Perry High School.  On Oct. 20, 1962 she married William (Bill) Straub who survives. She had been employed as a nurse’s aide at the former Greenville Hospital for 13 years and then was a home health care provider for 14 years.  Helen enjoyed cooking and baking, especially for the holidays and birthdays.   She enjoyed doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, bingo and reading.  She had belonged to the grange for over 50 years and enjoyed the friendship and company of being with the members of  the grange and the people from her church. Helen was always willing to help out where ever she could.  Over the many years she had also helped with the annual Mercer County Grange Fair. Other enjoyments of Helen, included tending to her house plants, gardening and outdoor flowers and planters.  She was a collector of cook books and recipes and chicken knickknack and collectables.  She always enjoyed the gatherings with her family, especially the picnics on the patio.

In addition to her husband of 56 years, she is survived by two sons, James Straub and his wife Emily, Stoneboro and John Straub, Fredonia; two daughters, Jean Cullen, Hadley and Julie Straub, Greenville.; her siblings, Dave Shilling and his wife Karen, Bill Shilling and his wife Mary, Clair Shilling and his wife Carolyn, John Shilling, Peg Hause and her husband Wayne and Joan Ansell.  6 grandchildren, Isaac and Aaron Straub, Jenny Patterson and her husband Kyle, Parker, Matthew Cullen and his wife Sara, Michele Maust and her husband Scott and Joe Straub and his wife Jackie; 6 great grandchildren, Jasmine, Ella, Levi, Aleah, Trevor and Derek.  Many aunts, uncles and cousins and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Paul Shilling.

A Service Celebrating and Remembering the life of Helen E. Straub will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at 3:00 pm at the Fredonia Presbyterian Church 24 Water Street, Fredonia with Rev. Eric M. Peters, pastor of the church officiating.  Family and friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 2:00 to 3:00 time of service.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the care and the direction of the Robert L. In lieu of floral tributes the family has suggested that memorial tributes be made to either the Fredonia Presbyterian Church or to the New Vernon Grange.
