George Carey Obituary

George R. Carey Hadley, Deer Creek Twp. passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 11, 2024. He was 91.

He was born in Mercer on October 16, 1932, a son of Ralph and Hazel Mossman and was later adopted by Neyman and Sadie Carey. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving honorably during the Korean War. On October 30, 1955, he married the former Helen B. Burnette, who preceded him in death on July 24, 2024. Along with his wife, he owned and operated for 25 years, Carey’s Hardware and Lawn and Garden, Sheakleyville, where they also were dealers for Wheelhorse and Speedex Tractors and Husqvarna's line of products. He previously was an automobile mechanic for his brother-in-law, Glenn Burnett, at Burnetts Garage, Hadley. He was a lifelong member of the Fairfield Presbyterian Church, where he was active in the church activities.

He is survived by his two sons, Richard (Darlene) Carey, Sandy Lake, and Thomas (Jennie) Carey, Clarks Mills; three sisters, Margie (Clarence) Hoye, Nancy Ackley, and Donna Winner; five grandchildren, Becky, Amanda, Elizabeth, Nicholas, and Jeremy; several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Private family services will be held at the Robert L. Snyder Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 3223 Perry Hwy., Sheakleyville, with Rev. Brian Ennis, pastor of the Fairfield Presbyterian Church, officiating. He will be laid to rest next to his wife, at the Fairfield Cemetery.
