David C. Hughes, Hadley, Sandy Creek Twp. passed away early Sunday morning, June 30, 2024, following a brief illness at St. Paul’s Senior Living Center. He was 83.
He was born in Greenville on January 7, 1941, a son of the late Culmer William and Beulah (Cramer) Hughes. He graduated from Commodore Perry High School in 1959. On August 13, 1960, he married the former, Linda M. Downing, who preceded him in death on April 14, 2018.
David was a lifelong mechanic who began his career working at the former Smitty’s Garage in Sheakleyville and the former Steck’s Garage in Hadley. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he drove a semi-truck for Payne Trucking. He then resumed his automotive mechanic career at the former Mulaney Ford, Greenville, Kimes Chevrolet, Grove City, and later retired from Jerry Taylor Ford, Grove City. Throughout the years, he worked part-time for McDowell Auto Restoration. As a member of the NW Pa. Truck and Tractor Puller’s Association, he enjoyed pulling with his Cockshutt Tractor in local competitions. For over 50 years, he annually attended the National Tractor Pulling Competition at Bowling Green with his family and friends. David attended the Prime Timers at the Clarks Mills Community Church and could be found daily enjoying his morning coffee with the guys at Chess Service, where he would start his day following his morning walk from his residence.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah (Paul) Yoos, Greenville; a special friend and companion, Patricia Stright, Hadley; a sister, Mary Ellen (Scott) Russell), Greenville; a brother, Steve (Shirley) Hughes, Hadley; two grandchildren, Nicholas Yoos, Pittsburgh and Chelsea (Travis) Yoos-Cessna, Sterling, VA and a great-grandson, Aiden Cessna.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Linda, a son, David E. Hughes, and a sister, Judith Hughes.
Respecting David’s wishes, no services are being held; he will be laid to rest next to his wife, Linda, and his son David at the Hadley Cemetery. A tribute video of David’s life can be viewed below.
