James H Smyers, Greenville age 95, decorated World War II veteran, passed away, surrounded by family, in his home on July 7th.
He was born to James and Alfreda Smyers on Feb. 25th, 1924 in Millvale, PA. James was drafted into the Army after graduation from Shaler High School in 1943. He served with distinction with the 100th Infantry Division. He marched with the 397th Regiment from the south of France to the Elbe River, in Germany between September 1944 and May 1945. He received the Bronze Star with Valor, among other ribbons, for his actions on the front. Returning home, he attended Thiel College, and became an officer for the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity while attaining his Bachelors Degree in Metalurgical Engineering.
James Smyers loved Greenville, and raised his family here; a loyal member of the community for over 50 years. He embraced a love of the outdoors. He was a consumate hunter, and fisherman.
James leaves Martha (nee Widmer), his wife of over 63 years; His son, James M. (Lisa) of Cranberry, PA; his daughter, Iris Hale (David) in Denver, CO; granddaughters, Amanda Fink, and Rebecca Rogers (Seth). James leaves Greg Rowe, whom he cherished and nurtured with the respect and admiration of a loving father.
He also leaves behind Dean Poolos, MD, a Delta fraternity brother, best friend, and a brother in every sense of the word for nearly 75 years.
It was James desire that no services are being held. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care and direction of the Robert L. Snyder Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 3223 Perry Hwy., Sheakleyville with cremation through the funeral home crematory.
